Acceptance Sampling for Variables (ANSI/ASQ Z1.9)

ANSI/ASQ Z1.9 (formerly MIL-STD 414) is a generally accepted standard for acceptance sampling by variables (real number) data. The sampling plans work by
(1) calculating the sample's average along with a measurement of dispersion (standard deviation or range) and
(2) comparing these results against tabulated criteria to determine whether the lot should be accepted or rejected. Switching rules similar to those of ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 (formerly MIL-STD 105) determine whether sampling should be normal, tightened (i.e. more stringent), or reduced (less stringent).

This includes identification of the correct sampling plan, assessment of the results to determine whether the lot should be accepted, estimation of the nonconforming fraction of product, and application of the switching rules.

Areas Covered in the Session:

Know how to use the lot size, the inspection level, and acceptable quality level (AQL) to define the sampling plan in terms of sample size and acceptance criteria.
Know how to assess the sample statistics (average and standard deviation or range) to determine whether the lot should be accepted, and also to estimate the nonconforming fraction of the product in the lot.
Recognize that, when the process standard deviation is known (i.e. need not be estimated from the data), a smaller sample size is required. This ties in with process capability studies in which the process standard deviation is quantified.
Apply switching rules to determine whether inspection should be at the normal, tightened, or reduced level.
Recognize that the characteristic under inspection must follow the normal (bell curve) distribution for ANSI/ASQ Z1.9 to work properly.
